Although today we have a wide choice of paints in all colors, we can have such a precise idea that we cannot find the one we want. There is then only one solution to carry out your project: create your own paint color yourself. If it seems easy, the fact remains that the mixture of colors and the use of certain pigments require a light hand to avoid the risk of being disappointed. How to successfully create a color?
The color rule
If you want to create a original color that we will not find elsewhere, but that we are a neophyte in the matter, it is necessary to start by taking an interest in the basics. This ba-ba involves owning a chromatic circle because it allows for example to create a color only from primary colors. This step is essential to be able to subsequently mix the colors without risk of making a mistake and obtain an aesthetic result corresponding perfectly to what is expected.
The primary colors are yellow, cyan (blue) and magenta (red). It is from these three unique colors that we can create all the colors secondaryto know :
- Orange (yellow + red),
- Green (blue + yellow),
- Purple (red + blue).
You can then obtain analogous colors, i.e. subtle variations of the secondary colors. The notion of proportions then becomes necessary. Thus, with 50% red and 50% blue, you get purple. But thanks to various modifications of these proportions, one can have a very wide chromatic variety in order to obtain an absolutely ravishing shades of violets.
It is also possible to create other colors by mixing a primary color with a secondary color, as shown in the following examples:
- Brown: red + black,
- Purple: red + purple,
- Indigo : bleu + violet,
- Pink: red + white,
- Turquoise: blue + green.
It is interesting and finally very playful to have fun at create your colors to then make your own paint mixtures allowing you to review all the decoration of your home (walls, objects, furniture, frames, etc.). It is in any case the best way to proceed to obtain a custom interior.
Finally, thanks to the chromatic wheel, it is easy to visualize the colors which oppose each other and which are called complementary colors. These must be used with great virtuosity to obtain a harmonious result.
If you have no experience in the field, do not hesitate to download a color wheel. It will then be quite possible to create one of your own, once you have acquired a bit of technique.
Make your own paint colors with pigments
If you do not want to buy several pots of paint of different colors in order to mix them, you can limit yourself to a pot of white paint and get pigment. In this way, we obtain very pretty colors and this technique responds perfectly to the desire to create an original decoration. Some preliminary tests are essential because you have to have a very light hand, the pigments having a strong coloring power. So be careful if you want to get a discreet color paint.
Rigor and precision
It is fundamental tobe precise in your mixesbut also to carefully note the quantities of white paint (in cl or litre) and pigments (in g) used to create a particular color.
This precaution is essential because it makes it possible to recreate strictly the same mixture on another day. This is the case when you have not prepared enough material to complete your work. When you create your own colors, you should not take the risk of repainting the same room with different baths. On the contrary, all preparations must give an absolutely identical result.
Carry out a test before attacking the work
Watching, even with a magnifying glass, the color of paint obtained with mixtures or thanks to pigments is not enough to ensure its rendering once it is applied. The light plays a lot on the colors, but at the drying also the shade may vary slightly. We therefore try on a part of the wall a little away or on a board for example and we wait for the paint to be completely dry.
A delay often days is perfect for giving the paint time to take its final color. It is therefore necessary to be patient to know if we are retouching the mixture or if the paint whose color we have created ourselves is ready to be applied.
Homogeneity of the mixture
Better to equip yourself with a suitable accessory to get a homogeneous mixture. This is the case of mixer also sometimes called the mixer.
It is essential to mix the paint throughout the work so that the color obtained remains perfectly uniform. This prevents the pigments from settling at the bottom of the pot. This is a risk that is better not to run because it leads to irregularities in the color.
Another precaution to take to avoid breaking the bank: do not mix directly in the pot of paint that you have just bought. In case of failure, it is impossible to catch the color. Unless you use it to repaint the cellar, the can of paint may end up in the trash.
