Filasse gasket: usefulness for waterproofing and how to make it

In the majority of cases, plumbing leaks are due to leaks in the connection of the pipes. To permanently remedy this situation, it is sometimes enough to replace the tow seal. Here’s how.

Choosing the right sealant

In addition to increasing water bills, plumbing leaks can also, in the long term, cause significant damage to the building; or be the cause of serious humidity problems in a house. However, before taking drastic measures, namely completely changing your pipe network, you must first check the tightness of the pipe connections. Indeed, these replacement works can be expensive.

Who knows, by chance, you may just need to renew your seals?! This is often the case when leaks are found at elbows and screw fittings on steel, brass or galvanized pipes. You have three options. Firstly there is teflon. Marketed in the form of a roll, this thin white tape wraps around the threaded parts of the tubes. Its great disadvantage is that a good thickness is essential for an excellent seal. Often then, it is necessary to make several attempts before obtaining convincing results.

Otherwise, both simple and easy to install, the tow seal has always been renowned for its great impermeability. Nothing surprising if plumbers swear by the latter. In addition, apart from its very affordable cost, the ball of tow is made from the natural fiber that is hemp. As a last alternative, you will find anaerobic resins. However, as these joints harden very quickly, their use is only recommended for professionals.

Successful installation of the tow joint

On its own, the tow will not be enough to seal the leaks from the pipe fittings. This is why this material must be mixed with sealing paste. However, caution is required in the choice of this sealant, particularly if the piping concerned is part of the drinking water pipes. In this case, pastes essentially intended for this purpose are to be preferred.

Once you have the necessary accessories in your possession, the first step is to clean the threaded parts of the pipe by gently scraping them in the opposite direction to the thread with a hacksaw blade. This gesture will allow a better hanging of the ball of hemp. Thereafter, start winding the tow in the direction, this time, of the thread, taking care to extend well so that the material adheres well to the thread and does not loosen.

Make a few turns then cut the linen. Check that no yarn from the ball has been inadvertently introduced into the steel tube, as this could hinder the circulation of water, or even clog certain installations. Then, with your finger, coat all of the tow with sealing paste evenly and smoothly. A simple coat will suffice so as not to over-grease the thread seal. You can finally fit and screw the male and female connector.
