There’s something fun about designing the mood of a room by choosing the right paint color. Certainly, white walls are stylish and go well with almost any interior. But if you choose the right color, the one that suits your home, then it will look more unique. So here we go, it’s up to you to choose the colors, then prepare your site. This is predominant. The final result depends on her. So don’t rush, don’t be impatient. Follow the steps as you go. Below we explain how to do it step by step.
Step 1 – Prepare the Wall Properly
Wipe your wall with a rag. Clean the wall with soap and water. Before painting, your wall must be completely clean, dry, dust-free – in short, completely healthy. Fill in the holes in the wall because it is also important to level any irregularities: fill in any holes left by dowels, cracks or uneven areas if there are any with a filler that you will take care to smooth out well. In order to achieve a perfect smoothing, you can sand your wall. Before doing all this, you will have protected your floor and removed any socket covers and baseboards if possible.
Step 2 – Mask the areas to be protected with masking tape
Just as you’ve just protected the floor – which you need to tape so it won’t slip, use tape to hide the areas you don’t want painted. If you are going to paint your ceiling, stick masking tape wide enough. You’ll pull it off fairly quickly after painting so you get a beautiful separation rather than a pretty uneven line.
To be able to paint your wall or ceiling, you need basic equipment. It consists of a bucket or a paint tray, a squeegee, a roller and possibly an angle brush. Today, the paints found on the market are ready to use. The area you can paint with a color is usually indicated on the container. It is better to calculate a little more so as not to have unpleasant surprises.
Step 3 – Apply Primer Before Painting
Your wall being made of highly absorbent material plaster if any, it is best to apply a primer before painting. Otherwise your wall will completely absorb the paint. The primer has two functions: it evens out the surface of your wall even more and makes it easier to adhere to the finish coat. In order to paint in optimal conditions, it is recommended not to paint in a room that is too cold or too warm but temperate, otherwise this can promote the appearance of irregularities on the surface of your wall.
Step 4 – Start painting in the corners
Start your painting operation in the most strategic places: start by painting a strip of a few centimeters in the corners, around the window and around the sockets and switches. Remember that your baseboards should be painted with varnish and your radiators with a special heat-resistant paint.
Step 5 – Paint the Ceiling Before the Walls
Paint the ceiling first, then the walls. Choose the color you like and get to work! Treat large areas with a wide roller. For an even paint application, wipe your roller regularly. You can use a telescopic pole to paint your ceiling, and also for your walls. Of course, the best way to reach a high ceiling is to use a ladder. Make sure you have a good position.
Step 6 – Use the Right Painting Technique
First paint your wall lengthwise, then crosswise and finally again lengthwise with a straight overlap. This will distribute the color evenly. Proceed square meter by square meter. And never put a new coat of paint on paint that is already dry. This allows you a perfect result, without unsightly lines or visible sweeping. It is therefore best to work in three stages: first apply the paint, then distribute it and finally unroll it. Roll your brush first in one direction, then in the opposite direction and finally in the original direction. Alternate horizontal and vertical stripes. Once your wall is covered, take some distance.
Step 7 – Apply enough coats of paint
How many layers to apply? It depends on the chosen color. For light tones, you can get by with two coats. For bright or dark or very shiny tones, you may need to apply three coats of paint. The important thing is to apply starting with a primer. There are some available in the color of your paint finish.
Step 8 – Clean your hardware
Are you tempted to leave your brushes and rollers hanging? This is probably not the right method to adopt. On the other hand, you do not have to wash your equipment as soon as the painting is finished. You can wrap them in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, wait for the paint to dry, and clean them the next day. The best in this case, is still to refer to the manufacturer’s information: read the instructions for use on your paint cans.
Painting with application pays off. If you prepare correctly and paint conscientiously, the result will necessarily be successful. With a few helpful tips, the right paint color and the right tools, you can easily renew the color of your wall.
