How to prepare a wall before painting it ?

For the finish of your wall to be impeccable, a good coat of paint is not enough. It is imperative to carry out preparatory work upstream, so that downstream, the result obtained is up to your expectations.

Cleaning

Before applying the paint, the first step is to provide an even surface to the walls. To do this, you need to erase rough edges and other irregularities using a fine-grain emery cloth or a spatula. Be careful not to apply too much pressure if you choose the spatula because marks may appear on the surface.

Once done, move on to sanding. This operation will smooth the surface properly. Now proceed to cleaning. Preferably use a glitter detergent made of pine resin. Bleach will help you get rid of mold, if any. Rinse with water and let dry before moving on to the next step.

Patch holes and cracks

To fill the holes, just use filler. After applying it, use a putty knife to smooth the surface well and avoid excess thickness. Use fine grit sandpaper to sand the surface so that it is perfectly flat.

In the case where the holes are more or less deep, the use of plaster will be required. For the case of cracks, the filler will do the trick. Before applying it, be sure to enlarge the crack using a scraper.

It is necessary that the bottom of the crack is narrower than the edges. Remove the dead plaster, eliminate the dust then apply the coating. By placing a banner at the end of the operation, you avoid reopening the crack.

Apply the undercoat

The final phase of preparing the walls is to apply an undercoat. The latter aims to promote the fixing of the support. This way, when you apply your paint, your walls will be less absorbent and you will save a lot of money. The undercoat should be applied liberally. The installation is done with brushes or rollers like paint. You can now repaint your apartment or the rooms of your house!
