How to unclog a clogged toilet: how to unclog a toilet?

The toilet can suddenly be clogged, either partially or totally. This is a problem that must be resolved quickly. We can call a plumber for an emergency intervention, but the bill can be steep, especially if the unclogging of the WC must be carried out in the evening, during the weekend or during a public holiday. It is therefore more than useful to know the different solutions that allow you to unclog your toilet yourselfeither using a product or with equipment and we keep as plan B the call of a pro if the toilet pipe remains clogged despite everything.

Unclog the toilet drain: beware of very toxic chemicals

You can find in supermarkets a chemical unblocker suitable for toilet piping. It is generally very effective because all you have to do is put the product in the bottom of the bowl and wait about ten minutes (a full night depending on the case) then flush the toilet to unclog your toilet. It is rare for a cork to resist this kind of solution. The liquid drain opener removes toilet paper, grease, hair, all organic matter, etc.

The disadvantage of this type of pipe product is that it is toxic. Its inhalation is possible during use and this leads to irritations in the eyes, hands and even mucous membranes. In the most serious cases, the lesions may be permanent and the risks of blindness are not to be ruled out.

A chemical unblocker contains sodium metasilicate pentahydrate or caustic soda. This type of component is frequently used in the industrial field to manufacture detergent products. It is therefore recommended to wear protective glasses as well as gloves and a mask when it comes to using a chemical product to unclog the toilet pipe.

Even if we can read here and there that there is no danger for materials including plastic, we must still be careful. Moreover, theenvironment is very sensitive to caustic soda which pollutes the water tables as well as the rivers and turns out, as a result, dangerous also for fauna and flora. This category of products should therefore only be used as a last resort.

In this family of chemical unblockers, there is also the one withhydrochloric acid or at thesulfuric acid. They are very effective even on large plugs, but they should only be used exceptionally, when milder solutions have failed, because they are also very corrosive and highly polluting.

Clogged toilet drain: the usefulness of dishwashing liquid

Softer but still effective on small clogs, the dishwashing liquid mixed withboiling water is a means not to be neglected when the toilets are clogged following a quite moderate congestion. This is the solution that is used in first intention only if the toilet bowl is not completely filled with water.

The procedure is simple: first put a little dishwashing liquid in the toilet bowl and then pour a bucket of ultra-hot water into it. Thus, the force of the water can help evacuate the small blockage in question.

If nothing happens, and the toilet remains clogged, the operation must not be repeated because there is a risk of completely filling the bowl, or even causing it to overflow…

Unclog your toilet: sodium bicarbonate associated with alcohol vinegar

Sodium bicarbonate is a good all-rounder which can therefore be of great service when a well-clogged toilet no longer evacuates anything. The solution is very simple since all you have to do is pour a cup of bicarbonate crystals then a glass of spirit vinegar or White vinegar. A foam then forms following a chemical reaction impressive but without any danger, neither for health nor for the environment. However, it is recommended to close the toilet bowl as soon as these products have been poured to the bottom and to pause for 30 to 40 minutes so that the active foam can take effect. At the end, the pipes are rinsed by pouring only a bucket of very hot water into the WC.

This baking soda/vinegar solution quickly dissolves clogs, cleans the toilet drain, descales and deodorizes. And what’s more, it only costs a few euros.

Unclog the toilet drain: the septic tank product with enzymes

Even if you have mains drainage, when it comes to unclogging the toilet without the help of a plumber, you can use a liquid septic tank product because it contains enzymes. It is a solution that works well on small caps uniquely. The result is satisfactory provided the product with enzymes is left to act overnight. In the morning, all that remains is to flush the toilet.

Unclog toilets with suitable equipment

At least, when we resort to a mechanical solution to evacuate a blockage that obstructs the toilet pipe, there is no risk of polluting waterways or groundwater, or even of being the victim of irritation or burns. Here is the equipment that can be used to unclog a toilet and that gives good results.

  • The toilet suction cup which causes a to-and-fro movement of the water, in the vertical direction, and consequently mechanically releases a plug, even quite substantial.
  • L’wet vacuum cleaner which is used first of all to empty all the water which stagnates in the bowl, then to suck up the plug stuck in the bottom. Be careful never to use a traditional vacuum cleaner for this type of repair!
  • The vacuum pump or pump unblocker ultra efficient, proof of this is that plumbers use it to unclog their customers’ toilets very quickly. The pump is equipped with a piston it is enough to operate by pulling it fully upwards before placing the unblocker in the bowl so that its base completely covers the toilet hole. It then remains to make energetic movements from top to bottom while pumping using the piston. The plug ends up being evacuated.
  • The ferret with crank (preferable to the handleless ferret), which gives good results to those who know how to be patient. But when the toilets are clogged, we have no choice but to unclog the pipe in order to make the little corners operational again… The ferret must therefore be introduced into the bowl and then into the pipe until it is blocked by the plug. It is therefore time to manipulate the crank in order to activate the ferret which thus goes disintegrate cap. It is presumed that this is eliminated when the ferret is no longer blocked. It is therefore necessary to remove the device from the toilet and then flush the toilet.

Pour reduce the risk of clogging the toilet drain, we avoid throwing too thick toilet paper – even if it is very pleasant –, paper handkerchiefs, paper towels, condoms, feminine protections such as tampons and periodic napkins… Beware also disinfectant wipes that it is better to throw in the trash rather than in the bowl, and we are wary of biodegradable rollers which still clog the pipe in the long run. Finally, you have to be particularly careful with very young children who may find it super funny to “hide” their little Playmobil pieces or a Lego in the toilet…
